A while back when I installed SP-3 for WinXP, which my desktop is running, I was annoyed to see the Address toolbar removed from the Taskbar, as this is a feature I'm very fond of and use a lot. It's a time saver!
I thought I forgot how to add the Address Bar to the taskbar, but it turns out I was thinking of Win2000, as it is a standard feature in WinXP - until SP-3 saw the light of day!
Speculations seem to evolve around concerns that integrating the Address Bar may be construed to be in violation of certain antitrust rulings, especially in the European Union. If this is true or not, I can't say, but the fact is the Address Bar is gone!
The key to the problem - and thus to the solution - lies in the file browseui.dll, which is located in the System32 folder.
The modified WinXP SP-3 version of browseui.dll needs to be replaced with a WinXP SP-2 version of the file.
0] On a WinXP SP-2 computer, go to this folder: C:\Windows\System32\
1] Locate browseui.dll and copy it to the root directory of the SP-3 machine (Or any location the SP-3 machine has access to).
2] Reboot the SP-3 machine in safe mode (press F8 right after reboot, before Windows starts to load).
The reason you need to work in safe mode is because browseui.dll is a system file that can be altered while Windows is running. "Safe mode with a command prompt" is the suggested mode.
3] In the Command Prompt, type this copy command: "xcopy C:\browseui.dll C:\Windows\System32\" (without the ").
4] Reboot the SP3 machine normally.
Unless you managed to screw it up, or your system was screwed already, you should now have the option to add the Address Bar to your desktop.
No, I did not come up with this solution myself. I ripped it of a website, from someone who ripped it from another website. See links below.
I should mention, that the copy-thing may not work if you are not logged in as administrator on your system.
